A Loan Bike Opportunity: Suzuki DL650 vs Hayabusa

Introduction: A Loan Bike Opportunity

Whilst having its service (nice to know everything is working properly in time for the winter!), the Hayabusa underwent some warranty work in the form of a replacement regulator/rectifier. I can’t say I had any problems with the original on, but since it was part of a recall, the work needed to be done anyway. Thanks to the Alford brothers in Folkestone, I had the loan of a brand new Suzuki DL650 whilst the Busa was being worked on.

First Impressions

Straight away, I loved the riding position of the Suzuki DL650. It was upright with a comfortable reach to both the bars and the pegs – very different from the Hayabusa! In conjunction with the high seat height, it took a few miles to get used to the riding experience. Going round the first roundabout was a bit unnerving, despite the bike feeling well planted, as the combination of the skinny front tyre and long travel suspension is again a bit different to what I am used to!

Handling & Ride Feel

The DL650 seemed to do exactly what it was designed to do to a high standard. It had good road presence/visibility with light, responsive control, and all-day riding comfort. All that seemed to be missing was a bit more grunt, although I did prefer the twin in this format more so than in the SV650. It had enough power, but it was when overtaking and joining motorways that I felt as though a bit more oomph was needed, but by hanging onto the revs long enough, it had enough go to put a smile on your face.

Performance & Power

I do like the DL,650, and good reviews coupled with it selling well is a good indication of the rise in popularity of this style of adventure motorcycle. It’s a bike that could be used every day to commute, has enough ability and comfort to go on holiday with, and, provided you work that engine, could provide a few hours of back road fun at the weekends. Despite all this, I would have to get the litre V-Strom – more of the same but with the bonus of extra drive.

Final Thoughts: DL650 vs Hayabusa

I would have liked to spend more time with the DL650 (as I do with all other bikes I get to ride), but it was nice to be back on the Hayabusa. OK, it may be more expensive, not as practical, and nowhere near as comfortable, but it means business, and that power is just so addictive. If I had to cover serious mileage in a short space of time, the DL650 would be my preferred choice from a comfort perspective, but for sheer adrenaline boost, the Busa wins hands down!
